Students explore ideas—ideas about geography,
agriculture, climate, technology, biology, economics,
to name just a few.
The students participating in the lesson explore
the elements that carried certain societies to the top
rung on the ladder of what many consider high
civilization.
The span of the lesson’s questions and answers extends
along the following paths:
1. discover how certain advantages elevated civilizations
to early success in a competitive environment
2. discern how and why power and prosperity developed
from unexpected aspects of a society
3. look at the world of wealth, power, and poverty,
and discover what generated racism.
